The Black Poplars - and other symbols of our Twinning

In 2003, to celebrate ten years of friendship between the two towns, a tree was symbolically planted in each of Briec, Landudal, Edern, Landrevarzec and Langolen. These trees, Black Poplars, were donated by Coleg Llysfasi, near Ruthin. A nice touch was that, at each ceremonial planting, two ten-year-old children 'adopted' the tree, undertaking to care for it in its early delicate stages. The photograph (right) shows the tree in Landudal, two years later, apparently in good health and well looked-after. The picture below is of the planting ceremony in Langolen.
Briec has also named one of its squares, which includes the office of their twinning committee and the superb headquarters of the Bagad, 'Place de Ruthin' (Below). In this square can be seen the Sundial, handmade in Ruthin and donated to Briec.
Ruthin has responded by the naming of the principal roundabout in town as the 'Briec Roundabout'. This was ceremonially named (left) by the two Mayors during the visit of the people of Briec in 2004.
On display in the Public Library in Ruthin is a magnificent piece of Quimper Faience - a ceramic based on the Gwen a Du dancers. This was a gift from Briec to Ruthin. Quimper, only 15 kilometres from Briec, is famous for its ceramic industry.
We also have received a commemorative ceramic plaque in the traditional Quimper style
